What we are about

Get outside

We’re right on the trail so you don’t have to plan around us. Grab it and go.

Respect nature

Compostable packaging, no dyes, Wisconsin butter and berries when we can get them.

Bring snacks

Scratch-made, every one of them, and wrapped to survive the ride.

Our story

Three summers of markets. One little shack on the way.

Kaitlin and Eddie, Sayner, Wisconsin

We met in 2012 at Alterra’s Foundry cafe in Milwaukee’s Fifth Ward, and spent most of the years after that driving around Wisconsin and the country hunting down the best bakeries, cafes, and roadside food we could find. Somewhere in there, sharing a good snack in a beautiful place became the whole point.

After nearly fifteen years between Milwaukee and Madison, the drive back down from the Northwoods after a long weekend started to feel wrong. When Kaitlin stumbled on a listing for a tiny former cafe in Plum Lake being used as a house, we drove up the same day. It became our home, and the launching pad for this.

People come up here for memorable days outside. The food should be memorable too.

We started by baking a small lineup of our favorites out of our own kitchen for farmers’ markets around Vilas County, as the Sweetfern Snack Stand. The Stand grew up and got a roof: we’re building a small shack on the back lot. The front door opens onto the trail.

Sweetfern is the plant, by the way: the sweet-smelling shrub along every sandy trail up here. Crush a leaf next time you ride past one. We named the whole thing after it.

  1. First market, Sayner.
  2. Drywall, a ladder, and a lot of coffee.
  3. Doors open. Weekends to start.
  4. NextWe’ll name the month the minute we know it. Put me on the list.

The goods shelf

A few things to take home besides crumbs.

A small shelf of our own goods and things made by neighbors, at the counter once we open. Stickers and tees may come sooner; the opening list hears where.

Handmade mugs

Thrown and glazed by Kaitlin. No two alike, all of them good for coffee on the porch.

Tees & stickers

Our squirrels, on a shirt and on a water bottle.

All-purpose salve

Wild-crafted sweetfern, the plant we’re named after, and goldenrod in olive oil and beeswax. For bug bites, dry hands, and trail scrapes.

Local goods

Made-nearby things from people we like. Honey, maple, whatever the neighbors are proud of.

Gift cards

At the counter from day one. Join the opening list and you’ll know the day.

Questions

Things people ask us at the market.

ask us anything. we'll answer honestly.

So when do you open?

2027, weekend mornings to start. We’ll name the month the minute we know it; the opening list hears first.

Can I get anything before then?

Not on a schedule this year; we’re building. If we pop up, it’ll be on Instagram (opens in new tab).

Can I pre-order for a group ride?

Not yet — no pre-orders to start. We’ll open walk-up and see what the trail needs.

I’ve got a nut allergy. What’s safe?

Every opening-day item lists its ingredients; rotation bakes get theirs on the board at the shack. Most things contain wheat, dairy, and egg; the granola cookie has walnuts and sesame; the pesto focaccia has brazil and pine nuts. GF and vegan options will be marked at opening.

Are you open in winter?

That’s the plan. Ski and sled season is when the trail gets good and the cocoa earns its keep. We’ll post the season schedule once we set it.

Bikes? Dogs? Cars?

Bike parking out front, dogs welcome outside, cars welcome too.

Do you do wholesale or catering?

Why "Sweetfern"?

It’s the plant. Sandy trail, sweet smell; crush a leaf. The longer version is in our story.
